The film’s director Luc Besson announced the news on Instagram, posting a picture of the singer with the caption: “Rihanna is in Valerian!!!! ... and she has a big part!! I’m Sooo excited!!!” In case you couldn’t quite gauge his feelings towards this news, Besson added a smiley.
The film, which is based on a French graphic novel and set in the 28th century, will also star Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen and Dane DeHaan. It will be Rihanna’s third major movie role, following appearances in this year’s Home and 2012’s Battleship.
The singer is also preparing to release her eighth album, Anti. Earlier this month she revealed the cover art for it, which features a message written in Braille. She said: “The whole idea behind the Braille is that people who have sight are sometimes the people who are blindest.”
Valérian and the City of a Thousand Planets has a release date of 21 July 2017.
